Abstract
677,618. Liquid and gaseous fuel burners. LUNDBERG, K. H. F., and LUNDBERG, K. E. Dec. 23, 1949, No. 32943/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 2, 1950.] Class 75(i) In a liquid or gaseous fuel burner having a tubular casing provided with a air inlet and an axial air outlet, a tubular fuel member arranged axially within the casing and a nozzle member which serves as an air outlet valve, the nozzle member has a number of circumferentially spaced, longitudinally extending tangential slots in which are slidably mounted guide plates which can be projected a variable distance from the nozzle member when in various positions relative to the air outlet so as to form a series of tangentially-disposed channels in the space between the burner casing and the nozzle members to control the rotating or swirling motion of the air blast issuing through the air outlet and mixing with fuel discharged through the nozzle member. The apparatus comprises a casing 1 having an air inlet 2 and a tapered nose 3 forming an air outlet, a tubular fuel supply member 6 formed at its rear end with a double conical portion 7 held in position between conical seats 8, 9, connected by a nut 11, a fuel nozzle and valve member 13 attached to a sleeve 12 slidably mounted on the member 6 and formed at its rear end with a semi-cylindrical portion 26 formed as a rack which engages with a toothed shaft 28, Fig. 3, the member 18 having a number of plates 22 slidably mounted in slots 21 formed in the member 13 these plates being attached at their rear ends to an annular member 23 slidably mounted on the sleeve 12 and formed at its rear end with a sleeve 24 having a semi-circular rack portion 27 which engages with a toothed shaft 29. Rotation of shaft 28 moves member 13 to close the air outlet or vary the area of the annular air passage formed between member 13 and the inner wall 3<SP>1</SP> of the nozzle casing 1. Rotation of shaft 29 moves plates 22 in an axial direction relative to the air outlet to vary the amount by which the plates 22 project into the annular air passage. When plates 22 are in the fully retracted position an unobstructed annular air space is formed and this results in a narrow flame of great length; when the plates 22 are in the fully forward position, i.e. abutting wall 3<SP>1</SP>, maximum rotation of the air blast, impinging on the oil supplied through passages 17, 18 and 19, is set up and this results in a flame in the shape of a slightly conical shaped disc close to the burner outlet. Fuel passages 17, 18 and 19 may be cleaned, on opening a valve 50, by passing compressed air through passageways 45, 46, 48 and 49 and intervening groove 47 on the double coned rear end of the fuel tube 6. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 679,142.
