Abstract

677,603. Polishing-discs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 7, 1951 [March 17, 1950], No. 5483/51. Class 60. A polishing-disc 32, comprising one or more pairs of layers of fabric 11 of annular form, is made from a cylinder 12 formed by rolling a strip of the fabric and is compacted around the inner edges on a cylindrical former 21 by the application of heat and pressure. The cylinder 12, Fig. 3, is contracted intermediate its ends onto a former 14 by a wire 16 which is then removed and the sides of the annulus thus formed stitched together adjacent their inner edges. A plurality of discs 32, Fig. 6, are wetted adjacent their inner edges before being spaced apart by rings 27 on the former 21. A hole 31 in the bore 26 of the hollow former 21 admits hot fluid that evaporates the moisture in the discs as they are compressed by a die 29. The compacted discs are then secured against a shoulder 37, Fig. 7, on a shaft 33 by a nut 36.
