Abstract
677,514. Pads for sanding-machines. SYMONS, P. E. Feb. 10, 1949 [Feb, 21, 1948], No. 5199/48. Class 60. A pad for supporting a sheet of abrasive material in relation to the shoe of a polishing machine is formed by applying natural or artificial rubber to an apertured metallic or other stiff insert plate 1 and vulcanising and so moulding the rubber that it flows through the aperturing to provide a main body of rubber forming the support for the abrasive material at the front of the plate and a sheet of rubber at the back of the plate, the pad being constructed for attachment through the medium of the plate to the shoe. The plate is provided with holes 4 having extensions 5, 5a to receive lugs on studs moulded into the pad. These studs serve to attach the pad to the shoe. The pad is moulded with a series of parallel passages 14 obliquely disposed to its axis of reciprocation, and the ends 15, together with the bottom face 16, may be reticulated to faciliate attachment of the abrasive sheet. In transverse section, the bottom face forms an acute angle with the sides to enable the pad to reach corners in the work. Specification 677,601 is referred to.
