Abstract

A siloxane resinous coating is removed from a tin surface by treatment, at a temperature of at least 30 DEG C, with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide in a liquid glycol ether containing less than 1 per cent by weight of water and having an operating flash point of at least 90 DEG C, the pH of the solution being at least 11, said ether having the general formula RO (R1O) nX, wherein R is an alkyl or monocyclic aryl radical, R1 is an alkylene radical, p has a value of at least 1 and X is an alkyl or monocyclic aryl radical or a hydrogen atom. Specified ethers are tripropylene glycol monomethyl, isomethyl or mono-n-butyl ether, dipropylene glycol monoethyl and monoisopropyl ethers, propylene glycol monophenyl and mono-o-chlorophenyl ethers, ethylene gylcol monophenyl, mono-p-tetra-butylphenyl, monobenzyl and dibutyl ethers, tetraethylene glycol dimethyl and dipropyl ethers and diethylene glycol diphenyl ether nitrile. A specified siloxane is methylphenylsiloxane
