Class 87(ii) Butter is fed by a screw 5, Fig. 1, from a funnel 4 into a space between two pistons 1, 2, which reciprocate in a cylinder 3. The pistons with butter between them, then move together to the right until piston 2 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, then piston 2 stops and piston 1 approaches piston 2, the two pistons being finally aligned as shown with an opening 15 in the cylinder wall. The approaching movement of piston 2 forces butter through opening 15 and duct 7 into a filling or packaging mould. The pistons then return to the Fig. 1 position. The stroke of the pistons may be adjustable, to vary the feed to the mould. In a modification, Fig. 6, two left and right-handed feed screws 5 work continuously, excess butter escaping from the space between the two pistons into a relief cylinder 8 to raise a plunger 9 against a spring 12. A buffer 10 limits the movement of plunger 9. An indicator 17 fixed to piston rod 11 moves across a scale 18. The movement of plunger 9 may be used to control a switch to increase or decrease the speed of the screws as conditions demand, or to stop the machine if the supply of butter fails.
