676,719. Gear-cutting. POUTELL, S. E. Feb. 27, 1950 [Feb. 28, 1949], No. 5001/50. Class 83 (iii). A hobbing attachement for a centre lathe comprises a work-supporting unit 13 fixed to the lathe bed, an angularly adjustable workcarrying head 37 rotatably supporting the work, angularly-adjustable feed means 32 operable to advance the work to the hob, variable-speed drive means 107 connecting the work with the lathe headstock spindle 9, and a variable-speed transmission 92 connecting the feed means with the headstock spindle. The hob is carried on a spindle 8, the saddle being removed from, or moved to one end of. the lathe bed. The telescopic shaft 107 is driven through the change wheels 5 of the lathe, the lead screw 6 and wheels 71, 72. A variablespeed belt drive 76 drives the telescopic shaft 92. The feed screw for the slide 31 may be rotated manually by disengaging a worm 84. The guideway 19 for the slide 31 is pivotally carried on the slide 13. The work-spindle 70 and an overhanging centre support the work on a slide 45 adjustable vertically on the head 37 by a screw 55. Setting-up for hobbing straight and helical spur gears and wormwheels is described. The attachment may also be used for spline-cutting and dividing.
