Abstract
675,830. Grinding flat glass. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1951 [March 28, 1950], No. 97/51. Class 60. The two faces of a continuous ribbon of moving glass are ground or polished simultaneously by pairs of upper and lower tools 2, 1 rotatably mounted in independent supports 5, 4, each having traversing means to enable one tool of a pair to be moved independently of the other transversely across the path of the glass to a servicing position. The support 4 is mounted by means of either shoes or rollers on guides 14 while the support 5 is similarly mounted on guides 42. These guides are provided with racks 28, 39 engaged by pinions 25, 38 driven through worm gearing by motors 18, 29. In operation, the motors 18, 29 are controlled by reversing switches actuated by the supports 4, 5 which are thus kept in oscillation across the path of the glass to avoid directional polishing. When, however, it is desired to obtain access to one of the tools for servicing, this mechanism is used to displace the tool support to one side of the glass. On removal of one of the lower tools a chassis may be used to support the glass. The latter is fed by rollers 3, 31 and a plate 12 is provided to collect polishing material thrown from the tools during operation. The two tools of a pair may be oscillated similarly or oppositely and their path of movement may be curved. Specification 635,022 is referred to.
