Abstract

675,744. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 5, 1951 [Feb. 11, 1950], No. 2798/51. Class 38 (ii). Stationary electrical induction apparatus (e.g. a transformer) of the type having a winding which includes a plurality of spirally wound disc coils 10 stacked in superposed relation and means for directing the flow of a cooling liquid, comprises a plurality of radial spacer members 20-29 positioned between adjacent coils to maintain ducts therebetween, a first insulating cylinder 9 spaced radially inwardly of the disc coils, a second insulating cylinder 12 spaced radially outwardly of the disc coils, the radial spacing members 20-29 alterntely abutting the first and second insulating cylinders 9, 12, each of the spacer members being spaced radially from that cylinder which it does not abut, in order that the cooling liquid flow is directed between the disc coils alternately radially inwardly and outwardly and around the ends of the spacer members through the spaces between the member and the insulating cylinder against which they do not abut. The cooling liquid enters the assembly via a conduit 17 flowing upwardly and across each disc coil simultaneously, leaving the assembly via a conduit 30. The flow of the liquid across each disc coil is constrained in two " parallel " paths, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, due to a particular arrangement of the spacer members. The spacer members are U-shape in form (see Fig. 3), and have skewed slots formed therein to eliminate " dead " vortices such as 33, 34. By various arrangements of the radial spacer members and the provision of a number of spacing discs the cooling liquid may be directed over a number of disc coils in succession, i.e. a " series " flow, or around each disc coil in one direction only.
