A press for making panels such as trim panels for vehicle bodies applies consolidating pressure to assemblies of superposed laminations on the lines of a pattern defined by die means carried on a pair of arms at opposite sides of the press and so pivoted that they may be swung horizontally and alternately from a position in which the die means are disposed outside the press to a position in which the die means are alternately disposed between pressing members. The multi-platen (60a-60f) press shown comprises four sets of arms as at 77 to each of which is secured a die 72 for the accommodation of two panels 74, the arms of each set being mounted for pivotal and axial movement on rotatable shafts 78. In use pairs of dies 72 at the same level at one end of the press are successively loaded with material to be laminated each pair being in turn manually moved to expose the underlying pair; two shafts 78 (left hand) are then rotated to swing the associated arms 77 towards the platens 60 and on completion of a predetermined arc, e.g. 30 degrees, lugs 106, keyed to sleeves 88 in turn keyed by rollers 86 to shafts 78, abut the ends of lostmotion slots 104 and drive arms 112, and arms 77 connected thereto, which ride on their shoes 124 and 150 initially along fixed roller tracks 120 and 138 and then on tracks 134 and 152 carried by the platens 60, until the dies 72 are positioned between their respective platens, the edges of which serve as locating stops. The bonding operation is then effected, during which vertical movement of the dies is permitted by virtue of the rollers 86 rolling along flats 84, whereafter the arms 77 are withdrawn to the position in which they may be successively unloaded. In the meantime, the arms 77, at the other end of the press, which have already been loaded, are brought into operation to position the dies 72 thereof between the platens. The pressing members and all the arms 77 may be actuated by means of hydraulic systems having a common pump 50.
