Abstract

674,820. Control of A.C. motors. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 1, 1949. [July 2, 1948] No. 15649/51. Divided out of 674,744. Class 38 (iii). [Also in Group XXXV] The tension in a moving web is controlled by variation in a loop length which alters the coupling between two coils to control the speed of the thread winding motor. As shown, variations in the length of a loop of thread between rollers 15, 16 passing through an eye 17 on a weighted arm 18 rocks a bar of magnetic material 31 to reduce the coupling between primary and secondary coils 30, 24. The secondary output is applied through a rectifier 26 to produce a blocking bias across a capacitor 27 in the grid circuit of a thyratron 23 connected across two lines of a poly-phase threadwinding-motor 12. As the loop length decreases, the blocking bias is reduced and the valve 23 conducts to unbalance the motor excitation and reduce its speed. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the coupling between the coils increases as the loop length decreases, and the valve (with a reversed rectifier in parallel) is in series with one phase of the motor (shown as a two-phase capacitor motor).
