Abstract

673,480. Reservoir pens. AKKER, A. J. M. VAN DEN. April 28, 1950 [May 10, 1949; Sept. 22, 1949], No. 10546/50. Class 146 (iii). A writing instrument which comprises an ink barrel 1, Fig. 1, a suction means 2 for ink, a pair of leaf springs 10, 11 located on either side of an ink supply tube 8 and ending in converging resilient writing nibs 12, 13, a tubular adjusting or controlling member 16 displaceable longitudinally of the instrument and partly surrounding the leaf springs 10, 11 with a certain amount of play with its lower part in clamping relation with the outer sides of the nibs, 12, 13, has a suction tube 7 for the ink fitting within and passing through the ink supply tube 8 and extending from the ends of the writing nibs 12, 13 a substantial distance into the ink barrel 1 its circumference being provided with one or more longitudinal grooves which in cooperation with the inner walls of the ink supply tube constitute capillary canals. The member 16 screws onto the barrel 1 and can be rotated to adjust the separation between the nibs 12, 13. The filling plunger 2 is prevented from rotation by a ridge 5 on the barrel wall. In use when ink between the nibs falls below the level of the tube 7, air enters the tube to allow more ink to flow through the capillary canals between the tubes 7, 8 to the nibs. In a modification, Fig. 4, the leaf springs 11 are of half-conical shape, hollowed to take the lower ends of the tubes 7, 8 and internally grooved to hold the ink. The leaf springs end in writing nibs 14, 15 and their upper ends are attached to hollow half cylindrical members 21 which can slide longitudinally in an extension 20 of the barrel against a spring 27 to allow the nibs to splay apart when pressed upon during writing. The suction tube 7 ends in a rubber ball 22 and has a continuation tube 23 from the other side of the ball which ends near the top of a rubber filling nipple 24. When the pen is horizontal or upside down the rubber nipple 24 is pressed against the end of the tube 23 and seals it to prevent leakage. In use a weight 29 attached to the tube depresses the top of the rubber ball 22 and so moves the top of the tube away from the nipple. In a further modification the nib ends of the leaf springs are hollow and the outside of the ink supply tube 8 is grooved and has capillary holes to the interior of the tube.
