Abstract

An electrochemical process of preparing cyclic fluorocarbon oxides comprises electrolysing a solution of liquid hydrogen fluoride containing a soluble hydrogen-containing compound, containing a carbon ring having an oxygen atom therein and having carbon bonded atoms replaceable by fluorine at a cell voltage insufficient to result in the formation of free fluorine and recovering a cyclic fluorocarbon oxide. The simplest products have the formula <FORM:0672720/IV (b)/1> where n is an integer. Homologues in which a saturated aliphatic fluorocarbon group, e.g. -CF3, -C2F5, -C3F7 replaces a fluorine atom may also be produced. Atmospheric pressure and 0 DEG C. are preferred reaction conditions. Examples describe the preparation of (1) decafluoropentamethylene oxide from pentamethylene oxide dissolved in liquid hydrogen fluoride; by a similar method the preparation of (2) octafluoro-tetramethylene oxide from tetramethylene oxide; (3) 1 : 2-hexafluoropropylene oxide from epichlorhydrin. Tetrafluorethylene oxide and hexafluorotrimethylene oxide are also mentioned. The products may be used as refrigerants and solvents.
