Abstract
A process for recovering nickel and copper from sulphides containing them comprises flash smelting the sulphides in a furnace to yield a matte containing nickel and copper and an overlying slag, subsequently or simultaneously flash smelting finely divided iron sulphide, e.g. as pyrrhotite, with a flux to oxidize and slag part of the sulphide and convert the remainder into molten drops of iron sulphide, and allowing these drops to fall through the slag and carry nickel and copper contained in it into the matte. The nickel and copper sulphides on the one hand and the pyrrhotite on the other hand may be separately produced in the form of concentrates from a pyrrhotitic ore. When the iron sulphide used is in the form of pyrrhotite an oxygen-rich gas, e.g. containing 90-98 per cent of oxygen, is used in sufficient quantity to oxidize one-quarter to two-thirds of the iron sulphide in the pyrrhotite used may be 20-35 per cent by weight of the nickel and copper sulphides which are flash smelted. The nickel and copper sulphides may be smelted by injection through one or more burners, the iron sulphide being subsequently injected through the same burners, or the two may be injected simultaneously through burners at opposite ends of the furnace. In the first case the first formed matte may be tapped before flash smelting the iron sulphide, the low-grade matte then formed being separately tapped. In the second case the high and low grade mattes may be separated, e.g. by a barrier over which the slag may flow, to be tapped-off on the side of the barrier at which the low grade matte is formed. Nickel and copper sulphides may be smelted in one furnace and iron sulphide in an adjacent furnace, the slag formed in the furnace flowing through a connection to the second furnace and being tapped therefrom. Alternatively, where one furnace is used the slag and matte may be tapped at opposite ends and thus flow in countercurrent with p one another. Any cobalt present is also concentrated in the matte.
