Abstract

672,194. Axial-flow fans. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Sept. 21, 1950 [Nov. 1, 1949], No. 23143/50. Class 110(i) A fan comprises an impeller and rotatably-mounted whirl-imparting vanes housed within an inner casing wall, and an outer casing wall spaced from the inner wall and forming a gas passage therewith.. The constant-speed driving motor 11, Fig. 1,. of the fan is supported by guide vanes 12 from an inner casing wall 13. To prevent instability at low loads, gas is recirculated from the outlet of the fan to the inlet, by way of an opening 22, a space 23 between the inner and outer walls 13, 16 of the casing, and a constricted nozzle 21 which increases the velocity of the gas before reentry. Whirl-imparting vanes 14 in the inlet and dampers 25 in the space 23 are carried by common pivot rods 15 which are operable in unison by means of a rod 18 actuated by a load-responsive piston (not shown). At full load, the vanes 14 are fully open, so that they impart no whirl, whilst the dampers 25 are fully closed, so that no recirculation takes place. As shown in Fig. 5, the dampers 25 have curved segments 30, so shaped that adjacent segments remain almost in contact during slight reductions below maximum load, but are moved increasingly further apart on further reductions of load. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 564,686.
