Abstract

671,794. Ignition systems. SMITSVONK N. V. June 15, 1950 [July 1, 1949], No. 14985/50. Class 7(iv) In an electrical ignition system comprising a spark plug 16, Fig. 1, at least two condensers 9, 10 and means, such as a transformer 6, 8 for charging the condensers, there is provided means, such as electromagnetic switch 15, 17, 18 which enables the condensers to be successively discharged through the spark plug 16 in order for each to produce an igniting spark there across, the discharge of each condenser, except that of the last one, causing the discharge of the next condenser. Energization of the primary transformer winding 6 is effected by operation of the contact breaker 3 in order to charge condensers 9 and 10 through rectifiers 11, 12 and 13. Upon condenser 9 attaining a given voltage an adjustable spark gap 14 breaks down and the condenser discharges through switch coil 15 and produces the first spark at the discharge type sparking plug 16; energization of coil 15 closes contacts 17, 18, thereby permitting condenser 10 to produce the second spark at the plug. The switch may operate instantaneously or with a time lag. In a modification, a further condenser and relay are provided so that three sparks occur at the'sparking plug. In a further modification, condenser 9, Fig. 3, discharges through relay coil 15 and sparking plug 16, the energization of coil 15 closing contacts 17, 18 and connecting a battery 30, which may be the same as that connected to primary winding 6, to the coil of a time-lag relay 24 whereupon closure of its contacts 26, 27 enables the condenser 10 to discharge through the coil of relay 19 and the sparking plug 16 and so close contacts 20, 21 which thereby connects the battery 30 across the coil of another time-lag relay 25 to close contacts 28, 29 and complete the discharge circuit of condenser 22. so producing a third spark at the plug. The timelag relays may have an adjustable delay. The relays may be replaced by spark gaps or gas discharge tubes, either of which may include controlling electrodes. Specification 651,592 is referred to.
