Abstract
In the working up of gases containing hydrogen sulphide into elementary sulphur by reacting hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in the Claus furnace, the gases leaving the furnace, after removal of the sulphur and, if necessary, after the combustion of any hydrogen sulphide with excess air, are freed from sulphur dioxide by absorption in a "sulphidine process" by xylidine or similar organic bases, and the absorbed sulphur dioxide is driven out of the absorbing agent and wholly or partly returned to the furnace. The hydrogen sulphide-containing gases may be obtained from the distillation or cracking of oils and some sulphur dioxide from the reduction of waste acid or acid tar from oil refining. Some of the sulphur dioxide from the "sulphidine process" may be liquefied or some of the sulphur dioxide may be withdrawn before the "sulphidine process" and with or without additional sulphur dioxide from waste acid may be worked up into sulphuric acid.
