In a typewriter the operation of a key 1 moves its corresponding type-lever 15 to an operative position where a common tensioned spring is released to effect a printing stroke and advance the carriage a letter-space. The keys 1 are pivoted at 2 and each has a depending flexible arm 5 carrying a pusher 4 which engages a shoulder 6 of a thin flexible connecting strip 7 and moves it to the left, Fig. 2. A projection 12 at the other end of the strip engages the forward edge of the type lever 15 and partially raises it into the operative position shown. This partial rotation of the lever 15 moves an attached toothed sector 17 into the path of its associated tooth sector 18 so that when the escapement mechanism of the machine is operated, one revolution is imparted to all sectors 18 arcuately coupled together and the particular type lever in the operative position is impelled to'effect printing. The escapement mechanism is operated by the strips 7 which engage a bar 9 rocking a shaft 11 permitting a letter space movement to a shaft 34, Fig. 5, driven by a cord 33 attached to an arm 30 strongly tensioned by the common spring 32. Attached to the shaft 34 is a pinion 35 meshing with a gear 38 having attached thereto a gear 39 which on receiving the letter spacing rotation causes pinions 40 to make one complete revolution, effecting through bevel gearing rotation of the sectors 18. In a modification, Fig. 6, the printing movement of those type levers moved into operative position shown is effected by the sliding movement of sectors 22 against ends 24 of the levers 14, the sectors 22 being activated by a single or double lobed cam 21 driven one or half a revolution for each character to be typed by a mechanism similar to that driving the pinions 40. The type levers are repulsed by a light spring 26 and the key-levers by springs 3.
