Abstract
<PICT:0669855/III/1> A machine for moistening, impregnating or coating blanks of or including fibrous sheet material and more particularly for softening shoe upper stiffness comprises a spiked drum and a co-operating fixed guide for passing the blank through the liquid. A casing 1 contains the treating liquid, such as acetone and has mounted in it a roller 3 driven by a pulley. A spiked drum 23 is mounted in an inner removable casing the lower part 28 of which forms a fixed guide round the drum. Rollers 13, 27 are also mounted in the removable casing and, together with the drum 23, are driven by gearing from the roller 3. The spikes 25 are in longitudinal rows on the drum 23 and pass in grooves 27a of the feeding roller 27. A second guide 33 has teeth 33b extending into grooves between the spikes 25. The removable casing has a spring 42 engaged by an adjusting screw 43 so that the rollers 3, 13 are yieldingly held together to act as squeezing rollers. A blank introduced through a slot 34 is gripped by the feed roller 27 and spikes 25 and passed over the plane surfaced guide 28 until the teeth 33b withdraw it from the drum and it passes between the rollers 3, 13 which squeeze it and eject it through a slot 35.
