Abstract

668,723. Extruding tubes of organic thermoplastic material. BRITISH XYLONITE CO., Ltd. Feb. 4, 1948 [Aug. 4, 1941], No.3299/48. Class 87(ii) Differences in the temperature and viscosity of plastic material may be compensated by adjusting the width of a slot 85 through which the material passes in the extrusion head. The extruded tube may be closed at its lower end and blown into contact with a mould as described in Specifi. cation 564,350 to form a hollow article. Plastic material from a heating chamber enters the extrusion head at 51 and flows through a series of openings, see Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown), so that it is) split up into 16 streams which pas: through fine holes in a web 82, Fig. 8 (not shown). The material then flows through the slot 85 into a chamber 86 and is extruded at 58. If the material becomes hotter and thus less viscous at one side, this is corrected by adjusting screws 95 to rock ring 92 and increase the width of the slot 85 at the appropriate side, thus increasing the flow and therefore decreasing the heating of the material at this side. Air is supplied to the tube through an air tube 62 mounted in a spherical member 68. The position of the air tube may be adjusted by screws 70b, which rotate the spherical member 68, to vary the wall thickness of the plastic tube. This movement of the member 68 is so small as not to affect the adjustments made to the width of the slot 85 by means of the ring 92. Whilst adjusting the position of the member 68, the pressure exerted on it by members 66, 67 may be relieved by adjusting screws 87. The extrusion head is heated by circulating oil between the threads of a screw 54, and the air tube may be internally cored for the passage of a heating medium. The extruded tube may be closed by raising the air tube 62 and simultaneously lowering a plunger 88 to apply an impulse to the plastic material in the chamber 86. In a modified apparatus, Figs. 9 to 12 and 14 to 20 (not shown), the position of the air tube 143, Fig. 9, is adjusted by four horizontal set screws, and the slot 85 is replaced by a slot 160 the width of which is adjusted by screws 165. This modified apparatus has the advantage that the flow resistance ring 161 may be easily removed.
