Composing-sticks.- A composing hand-stick for use with matrices E, Fig. 3, bearing typecharacters P for photographic reproduction, which may be to a larger, smaller, or the same size, comprises an L-section platform 1, Figs. 1 and 3, to support a composed line of matrices, and an abutment 2 to support the end of the line, recessed at 16 to facilitate manual removal of the line to a photographic reproducing machine. A 12-point em-scale 3 is provided to read off the length of the composed line. Further em-scales a-h, Figs. 2 and 3, are provided on a drum 4 rotatable by a knob 9 to bring a selected scale into position at a window 13 in the platform 1. The scales may be on separate strips fitted in recesses on the drum or on a sheet wrapped round the drum, which is protected by a cover 14. Recesses on the face of one of the drum hubs 5 engage a spring-ball detent 12 to locate the drum correctly in any selected position. The scale b corresponds to the scale 3 and is used when reproduction is to be to the same size. When enlargement or reduction of the characters is to occur on reproduction, a scale is used to compensate for this so that the reproduced line is of the required length. Thus, if the composed type is from a 12-point font, the scales b-h respectively are used when reproduction is to be to 12, 14, 16, 18, 24, 30 or 36-point size respectively. Alternatively, 8 or 9-point size type may be used, and in this case the scale a is used for reduction to 6 or 7-point size respectively, and the scale c for enlargement to 10 or 11-point size. The resulting 7, 10, and 11-point sizes do not reproduce to a mathematically accurate desired length, but it is sufficiently accurate for practical use. If the characters having no ascending or'descending stems are made somewhat oversize, as is customary, the line more nearly approximates to the desired length.
