Abstract
668,025. Drying cylinders of paper-making machines. PUSEY & JONES CORPORATION. April 25, 1950 [Jan. 16, 1950], No. 10144/50. Class 96. [Also in Group XIII] A steam heated drying roller comprising a hollow cylindrical rim 20 and a cylindrical shell 27 spaced from the inner wall 26 of the rim has longitudinally extending vanes 28, 29, 30, 31 projecting outwardly from the shell 27 into contact with the inner wall and dividing the space into longitudinally extending compartments 40, each of which compartments is in communication with steam supply means and condensate removing means. The vanes are pitched forwardly and outwardly in the direction of rotation of the roller and are made in angularly disposed sections. Apertures 33 in the shell, facing the inner surfaces of the vanes 28-31, provide openings for the flow of condensate &c. Inwardly of the shell 27 behind the apertures 33, deflectors 41, 42 lead to trough-forming angle-members 46, 47, the condensate flowing through apertures 46<SP>1</SP>, 471 into a trough 50, whence it is removed by suction scoops 68, leaving the cylinder through pipes 67 and passages 66, 65, the latter of which passes through the boss 23 of the cylinder head. Steam enters through a passage 64 concentric with passage 65 and leading to a space, separate from space 66, having connected thereto radial delivery pipes 72, 73 which in turn are connected to headers 74, 75 extending axially of the drum behind the vanes 28, 29, 30, 31. The steam is discharged into the passages 40 laterally through slots and does not impinge directly against the inner surface of the roller. The mouth of each scoop 68 is adjustable by varying the height of the upper lip from the bottom of the channel, the adjustment being effected by means of a worm gear arrangement. Fig. 13 shows an arrangement of a plurality of-rollers in which steam is fed from a pipe 115 to flow in parallel through one pair of rollers 120, 121 and is delivered therefrom to flow in parallel through the next pair 122, 123 while steam separated from the discharged condensate in a separator 108 joins the steam entering the next pair 122, 123 through pipes 117,119, the condensate being discharged from the separator 108 through a pipe 116 and so on.
