Abstract
667,000. Centrifugal pumps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON, CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1950. [Feb. 9, 1949] No. 2386/50. Class 110(i) [Also in Group XXIII] Relates to a centrifugal pump for discharging water from the washing tub of a dishwashing machine (see Group XXIII). As shown in Fig. 2 the pump comprises a chamber 44 having a discharge opening connected to a hose 48, impeller 47 driven by a motor 27 which also drives the coaxially mounted washing liquid circulating impeller 52, and a cover 102, Fig. 10. The cover has a central sump 117 at the centre of which is an upwardly extending wall 118. Extending tangentially from the wall to the periphery of the cover are vanes 120, 121 which are approximately the height of the wall. In the cover portion between the vanes 120, 121 is provided an arcuate inlet port 122 at the base of the wall 118. In the space between vane 121 and a third vane 123 no port is provided since this space is situated over the discharge or high pressure area of the pump chamber. The vane 123 terminates short of the wall 118 to provide a water flow passage 124 into the. cover area between vanes 123, 120 which area is provided with another port 125 communicating with the pump chamber. Both port slots 122, 125 are therefore in the low pressure area of the pump farthest removed from the discharge port. The port slot size is such that water can drain rapidly therethrough but prevents objects which might damage the pump from entering the chamber. This arrangement of the pump inlet ports prevents splashing and noise which would normally occur if the inlet ports were near to the discharge port. Also the vanes nullify the natural vortex action of water entering the pump chamber.
