Abstract

666,813. Valve circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1950 [Sept. 2, 1949], No. 22806/49. Class 40 (vi). A rectangular waveform generator comprises a pentode type valve having its anode and control grid connected via resistors to H.T.+ and its cathode connected to H.T. -, a diode is connected with its anode to the control grid of the pentode valve and first and second signals of the same waveform are applied to the cathode and anode of the diode respectively, the second signal being such that it neutralizes any part of the first signal which appears at the diode anode due to its inter-electrode capacity, and in this way the generator operates effectively at a high pulse repetition frequency. The Figure shows a generator in which a sinusoidal voltage having a frequency equal to the required P.R.F. is applied from an input 15 to a circuit 8, 9 which is resonant at the same frequency. Any part of the signal passed to the anode of diode 7 via the cathode/anode inter-electrode capacity is neutralized by capacitor 10. The pentode 1 is normally conducting due to its slightly positive control grid potential but during the negative portions of the sinusoidal voltage at the cathode of diode 7 the diode conducts, the control grid of pentode 1 drops rapidly to cut-off its anode potential then rising until after the sinusoidal voltage has passed through its minimum value and is rising, diode 7 is rendered non-conducting again, pentode 1 conducts and its anode voltage falls, the cycle then being repeated. Tapping 11 on inductor 8 is preferably connected to the mid-point of the inductor, thereby giving the minimum effective input capacity at the control grid of pentode 1. The " mark-space ratio " of the rectangular wave may be altered by varying the voltage of the cathode of diode 7 relative to that of the cathode of the pentode 1. The circuit may be used as a pulse shortening circuit by applying a pulse to the input 15 so that the resonant circuit 8, 9 " rings " but is so damped that only the first cycle of the damped waveform operates the generator. The rectangular waveform output may be integrated to produce a saw-tooth waveform.
