Abstract
A continuous process for the production of a phenol consists in passing steam through a liquid melt of a mixture of an alkali sulphonate and an alkali phenate to distil out the phenol, continuously recovering the by-product alkali sulphite by treatment of the melt residue with water, heating an aqueous reaction mixture of this sulphite in the form of a 25 per cent aqueous solution, part of the phenol, and not more than a 5 per cent excess over the theoretical amount of lime to give alkali phenate and calcium sulphite, separating the alkali phenate, and returning it mixed with additional alkali sulphonate to the fusion melt. The phenols prepared in this way include phenol, and other hydroxy aromatic compounds, e.g. naphthols, and hydroxy heterocyclic compounds, e.g. hydroxypyridines. The preparation of phenol by the claimed process is described, and in this case benzene is sulphonated with oleum at 60-80 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali salt; the temperature is raised subsequently to 150-170 DEG C. and benzene vapour passed into the reactants to give a 90 per cent or more conversion to benzenemonosulphonic acid.
