Abstract
Chlorine dioxide is prepared by producing a mixture containing chloric acid and a peroxidized compound selected from the group consisting of perborates, percarborates, pertitanates, pervanadates, perzirconates, the corresponding acids and acid anhydrides and benzoyl peroxide, or mixtures of these materials and maintaining the mixture at a temperature of 30-60 DEG C. A stream of inert gas may be passed into the mixture to remove the chlorine dioxide as it is formed. Compounds of titanium, vanadium and zirconium may be oxidized to peracids by other per-compounds and after the reaction to produce chlorine dioxide may be regenerated by further action of the per-compounds. Such per-compounds are perborates, perboric acid, persulphates, and hydrogen peroxide. The chloric acid may be formed in situ from sodium chlorate and dilute sulphuric acid. Continuous operation may be secured by regular addition of the reactants to the reaction vessel and regular removal of the reaction products.
