666,229. Travelling-wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1949 [Aug. 27, 1948; Dec. 3, 1948], Nos. 22641/48 and 31352/48. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (i). In a travelling-wave amplifier tube in which an electron beam is projected along the axis of a helix, the mean radius a of the helix for operation at a mean free space wavelength#, is given by the expression a=#x/2#n, where n is the ratio of the velocity of wave propagation in free space to that along the axis of the helix, and x is a numerical factor lying between unity and 1.8. Preferably it is equal to 1.5. The ratio of the diameter of the wire forming the helix to the pitch preferably does not exceed 0.6, and may for example be 0.5Œ0.1.
