Abstract

665,562. Packaging bitumen; paper and like bags. STANSFELD, R. Feb. 17, 1950. [Feb. 21, 1949] No. 4611/49. Classes 94(i) and 94(ii). A method of packing bitumen, resin, azocerite and other materials in blocks consists in introducing bitumen in a molten state to a preformed paper sack metallized on its inner face, i.e., having metal foil sheet bonded thereto, and supported in a mould or jig; the bitumen being allowed to set to form a solid block which is then withdrawn with its metallized sack from the mould or jig. Alternatively the paper sack may have a paper liner metallized on its inner face. The sack is formed of two layers of toughened paper a, b bonded together by bitumen or other water-proofing agent and has a metallized paper liner c. The sack has a stitched, stapled or other seam d folded over at its, sides. A rectangular former block is inserted into the sack to give it a preformed flat-bottomed shape, the sack is then placed in a mould having one hinged side and filled with molten bitumen, the whole being removed from the mould after the bitumen has solidified to form a block and the sack has been closed.
