Abstract
In the treatment of cellulosic textiles or textile material with caustic lyes of mercerizing strength, i.e. aqueous solutions of sodium or potassium hydroxide containing over 12 per cent by weight of caustic alkali, the caustic lye bath, or water used for rinsing the material immediately after its treatment with such bath, contains the chlorite of an alkali metal or of an alkaline earth metal. The textile material may be cotton, linen, mixed cotton-linen, or mixtures thereof with rayon or jute, and the proportion of chlorite when added to the caustic lye is preferably between 0.2 and 5 grams per litre of lye. The cellulosic material may be immersed in a bath of the chlorite and, while still impregnated with chlorite, may then be introduced into the caustic lye bath. In the example a pure linen fabric bleached with chlorite is immersed for about 20 seconds under tension in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide having a gravity of 30 degrees B<\>e. and containing 0.5 gram/litre of sodium chlorite and maintained at 60 DEG C., rinsed in water at 60 DEG C. and then as usual with dilute acid followed by water. It is stated that undesirable chemical action of caustic lyes on cellulosic fibres is reduced by the use of chlorites according to the invention, that raw or partially bleached linen can thereby be mercerized while reducing by half the usual losses in weight and improving the sheen, elasticity and tensile strength of the finished product.
