Abstract
Methylchlorosilanes of the general formula (CH3)xSiCl4-x, where x is 2 or 3, are prepared by heating a mixture of phenyldimethylchlorosilane and diphenyldichlorosilane and/or phenyltrichlorosilane in the presence of less than 50 per cent by weight of aluminium chloride based on the weight of chlorosilanes at a temperature of from 180 DEG to 250 DEG C. The preferred proportion of aluminium chloride is from 0.001 to 10 per cent by weight based on the weight of the total chlorosilanes. The phenyldimethylchlorosilane and the phenylchlorosilanes may be reacted in equimolecular proportions. Diphenyldichloro- and triphenylchlorosilanes are also obtained. A number of examples are given.
