Abstract
663,569. Transformers and inductances. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 3, 1948 [Dec. 4, 1947], No. 31369/48. Class 38 (ii). Relates to a laminated magnetic core having a clamp for holding the laminations tightly together comprising a one-piece metal member which is shrunk around the core. As shown, a fluorescent lamp ballast is constructed from stacked laminations of ferro-magnetic material and comprises outer core legs 3, 4, and a centre core leg 5 which carries coils 6, 7, 8. The laminations and core-sections are held together by cast metal clamps 9, 10. The method of assembly consists in first stacking the laminations of the centre core, mounting the coils, and inserting a wedge 12. The outer core legs are stacked and aligned, the three legs being placed temporarily in adjustable clamps 14, 16. A split mould 18, 19 is filled with molten type metal or other similar non-magnetic material having a relatively low melting-point and which contracts as it cools and hardens. Grooves 11 provide for locking-keys formed as integral parts of the clamps.
