Abstract
663,107. Vehicle hand brakes. BOSCH GES., R. April 16, 1949 [Oct.. 21, 19481. No. 10294/49. Class 103 (i). An auxiliary or parking handbrake, particularly for a heavy vehicle, has a lever 1 which is connected by a link 2 to the brakes and by a cable 23 to a servo unit comprising an energy storing device having a spring 22 that is normally kept compressed by fluid pressure on the opposite side of a piston 21. The fluid-pressure may be that which operates to apply the vehicle main brakes so that failure of that pressure automatically releases the spring 22 to act on the handbrake. A valve 17 is interposed in the fluid supply pipe to the chamber 20 which is operated by an auxiliary lever 9 on the handlever 1, the arrangement being such that the valve 17 is actuated to release the pressure in chamber 20 and bring spring 22 into action, only after a certain force, say 10 kg., has been applied to the lever 1. The piston 21 may be locked against the spring 22 by a catch 26, as shown in Figure 3, until a certain force has been applied to the hand-lever. The valve 17 provides a reaction force on the lever 9 proportional to the brake force and the cylinder 20 may be adapted for vacuum operation. In a modified arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the hand lever 1, servopiston 21 and valve 17 are connected to different points of a floating lever 41.
