Abstract

663,063. Magnetrons. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. March 11, 1948 [May 10, 1947], No. 7464/48. Class 39 (i). A multi-cavity magnetron wherein the resonators have slots constituting capacitative elements has an auxiliary cathode adjacent to but outside the slots and arranged to introduce electrons in the slots and thereby change the capacity and tune the magnetron. The Figure shows a magnetron wherein the resonators are of the hole-and-slot type. The auxiliary cathode 19 comprises a toroidal portion 21 filled with insulation and containing a heater wire. The toroid is broken at one point to allow connection to be made to one end of the heater through lead-in 25. The other end of the heater is connected to the casing to which connection is made through lead-in 27. The cathode is coated with emissive material at points opposite the slots of the resonators and projects a beam of electrons through the slots as shown by the dotted lines, the beam being focused by the magnetic field of the magnetron. Specifications 630,710 and 656,570 are referred to.
