Abstract

A process of treating filamentary material of indefinite length is characterized by the steps of repeatedly immersing the material in a bath of liquid as the material passes through a helical path about a rotating surface which is partially submerged in the bath, working the material between immersions while it carries a portion of the liquid out of the said bath by <PICT:0662900/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0662900/IV (c)/2> passing it about a rotating member having spaced axially extending ridges, and removing most of the liquid from the material before the next immersion. An apparatus for treating filamentary material by the above process is characterized by the provision of a pair of spaced canted rolls 5 and 6, one at a higher level than the other, and the upper roll may be fluted whilst the lower roll is smooth, an immersion trough 32 beneath the lower roll for receiving a bath of treating liquid therein, a pivotal bearing 21 for supporting said immersion trough with its inside surface adjacent the periphery of said lower roll, said bearing being positioned above the liquid level of the immersion trough at one side of said lower roll and having an axis generally parallel to that of the lower roll. The pivotal bearing 21 is provided with a central liquid-feeding conduit terminating in a lateral discharge opening communicating with said trough.
