Abstract

Acids of the formula <FORM:0662413/IV (b)/1> where x is -CH2- or -CO-, are prepared by iodinating the parent hydroxybenzyl-benzoic or hydroxybenzoyl-benzoic acids, especially with iodine monochloride or with an iodine-potassium iodide mixture. The products may be converted into water-soluble salts by treatment with a base or a basic salt such as a carbonate or bicarbonate. Sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are specified. Examples show the formation of the 4-hydroxy-3 : 5-di-iodo- and 2-hydroxy-3 : 5-di-iodo-benzyl- and benzoyl-benzoic acids and conversion into sodium salts.
