Abstract

661,702. Telegraph systems. CREED & CO., Ltd. April 17, 1950 [April 19, 1949], No. 10359/49. Class 40 (iii). In a telegraph system having a number of teleprinter stations some or all of which may be selected for simultaneous operation, as in a party-line or omnibus system, each station is provided with an answer-back device and comprises means whereby station identification signals sent by the respective answer-back devices are transmitted in a pre-arranged sequence. In one embodiment the answerback device of Specification 351,018 in which a shaft A carries a drum provided with rows of projections corresponding to the coded signals and a cam member F operating a bar to rock a universal bar D to release a transmitter for each code signal, the members F at the various stations T1, T2, T3... are provided with operating portions (1,2) (4,5) (7,8) ... The members F at the various stations are released simultaneously, and restricted or shortened identification signals are transmitted in sequence. In addition the cams F may be arranged to close a pair of contacts during corresponding different portions of their revolutions. A second arrangement comprises a modification of the answer-back device of Specification 452,446 in which a shaft A carrying a drum having wards corresponding to the signals is rotated slowly relatively to the speed of a shaft C controlling the signal transmitter. After shaft A has commenced rotation a cam K allows a lever H to move anticlockwise so that a lever C1 moves to the right and operates a bar F to release the signal transmitter, the lever C1 being operated to control the transmitter for each code combination of the identification signal. The cams K at the various stations T1, T2, T3 ... are shaped as shown in Fig. 5, so that the recessed portions permitting the actuation of the bar F by the cam B are restricted to provide a shortened identification signal and are angularly displaced so that the signals are sent in succession from the various stations.
