Abstract
661,032. Clocks. BROWN, T. A., and PERIVALE CLOCK MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Dec. 22, 1949 [Dec. 1, 1948], No. 31102/48. Class 139 A synchronous motor striking and/or chiming clock comprises a striking and/or chiming mechanism to be driven by said motor, a mainspring for driving the time train, an escapement mechanism to control the time train, a mechanism for winding the mainspring by the electric motor and means actuated by the time train for disconnecting the drive from the motor to the mainspring at the same time as it is applied to the striking and/or chiming mechanism and vice versa. The synchronous motor through gearing rotates a gear wheel 28, Figs. 2 and 5, which drives through gears 30, 31 two differential mechanisms 24, 25 associated with striking and chiming mechanisms respectively. The gear 30 carries the sun wheel 38, Fig. 5, of a differential the other sun wheel 41 of which is fixed to a gear 43 which drives a pinion 44 on a shaft 45 having a worm 46 with which a gear 47 meshes. The gear 47 is on a 'shaft 48 having a worm 49, Fig. 2, which drives a gear 55 on a sleeve 54 surrounding the minute spindle 50, Figs. 2 and 7. The inner end of a mainspring 52 is fixed to the sleeve 54 and the outer end slips in a barrel 53 connected to a ratchet 56 which co-operates with a pawl 58 to drive a gear 59. The mainspring is thus wound up by the synchronous motor through the differential mechanism, shown in Fig. 5, the planet carrier of which, Fig. 10, is normally arrested by the interengagement of the end of a pivoted arm 62 with a pin 61 of an arm 60 fixed to the planet carrier. When chiming or striking is to be effected a disc 65 allows downward movement of the lever 62 and the arm 60 and associated planet carrier are freed so that the drive from the synchronous motor to the mainspring is interrupted. Striking and/or chiming then takes place as described in Specification 489,855 upon movement by the time train of the arm 37, Fig. 2. The arm 60, Fig. 10, is again arrested after striking and/or chiming and the motor again winds the spring 52 which slips when fully wound. In another arrangement, Fig. 12, the pinion 55 is carried by a screwed sleeve 75 to which the inner end of the mainspring is fixed. The barrel 73 to which the outer end of the mainspring is fixed carries a pin 78 which engages a hole in a nut 77 which therefore moves from left to right as the mainspring is wound up and finally, when the mainspring is fully wound, engages an arm 79 carried by the lever 62 which is thereby moved to release the drive to the mainspring. In this case the cam 65 is shaped to raise the lever 62 to release the arm 60, Fig. 15, not shown, at striking and/or chiming. The mainspring may be initially wound by manual rotation of a gear segment 69, Fig. 2. The time keeping unit comprising the escapement and associated gears is removably attached to the back plate. Specifications 636,753 and 643,751 are referred to.
