Abstract
660,922. Tubular heat-exchangers. PORTEOUS, W. K. March 16, 1950 [April 14, 1949], No. 10183/49. Class 64(iii) A heat exchanger comprises a number of vertical runs of inner tubes a enclosed within outer tubes b, adjacent ends of the inner tubes a being joined by U-connectors e, e' which are enclosed in box-like covers d, d' respectively secured to flanges c at the ends of two adjacent outer tubes b and placing those tubes in communication with one another, the runs of inner tubes being secured and supported by means of complementary seatings f provided in the lower covers d' and the lower U-connectors e<SP>1</SP> whilst being free to expand upwardly. In the form shown plates l are disposed between the covers d, d' and the flanges c, and each of the inner tubes a is, for ease of assembly, made in two parts which are united by welding at r. The upper U-connectors are provided with wings w to locate them centrally within the upper covers d. Drain plugs h, h' are incorporated at the lower ends of the runs of tubing, in the U- connectors e' and in the covers d' respectively. Liners t are fitted at the entry ends of the inner tubes a to resist wear on those tubes by hot fluid passing therethrough, the fluid to be heated flowing through the space between the inner and outer tubes and through the covers d, d<SP>1</SP>. The heat-exchanger may be housed within a casing detachable in sections and lagged with insulation material such as magnesia. Transverse baffles may be provided on the outer tubes to direct hot gases passing through the casing. over those tubes. The uppermost set of baffles may serve as a platform on which a workman may stand when servicing the heat-exchanger.
