Abstract

660,715. Coke ovens. ALLIED CHEMICAL & DYE CORPORATION. May 10, 1949 [Aug. 23, 1948], No. 12422/49. Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii). A gas distribution system for firing a combination coke oven battery 13 includes a line 11 supplying blast furnace gas to a manifold 12 through a valve 16 operated by a known pressure controller 17 subject to the pressure in said manifold 12 and a line 25 supplying either coke oven gas or a mixture of coke oven gas and blast furnace gas to a manifold 45 through a valve 46 operated by a known pressure controller 47 subject to the pressure in said manifold 45. When the battery is fired with both rich and lean gas a known flow controller 31 of the meter type controls the passage of the coke oven gas through a. valve 30 in a by-pass line 27 and is set to supply sufficient coke oven gas to provide not more, than 25 per cent of the heat required to coke the charge. The flow controller 31 is connected through three-way valves 40, 41 to either side of an orifice plate 32 in the by-pass line 27 or to either side of an orifice plate 33 in the main supply line 25 and a by-pass line 42 with a valve 43 controls the supply of blast furnace gas to the said line 25. When the battery is fired by coke oven gas only, the valve 43 is closed, the blast furnace gas reversing valves are closed and disconnected, valve 14 is maintained open to keep the blast furnace gas system under pressure, thus preventing infiltration of air and the coke oven gas is supplied directly through the line 25, the flow controller 31 being connected to the orifice plate 33 and acting simply as a meter. A by-pass line 23 for coke oven gas is provided for use when it is desired to clean or repair any of the equipment associated with the line 25 and a heater 24 is provided for the coke oven gas to prevent condensation during its subsequent flow to the battery burner flues.
