Abstract

660,626. Assembling rubber bush mountings. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. July 20, 1949. [Nov. 26, 1948] No. 19149/49. Class 108 (iii). A method of assembling a tubular rubber insert A between an outer rigid tube B of smaller internal diameter than the external diameter of the insert and an internal rigid core C, comprises radially contracting the insert and applying thereto an axial thrust to force it into one end of the tube B, and forcing the core into the insert by axial pressure from the end of the tube opposite that into which the insert was forced. A cylinder 6 secured to the machine frame 1 has rigid therewith guide rods 11 for a cross head 10. A further cross head 14 is carried by the rod 15 of a piston 28 operable by air pressure within a cylinder 16 secured to the frame 1. The cross head 14 is slidable against springs 19 on tubes 13 rigid with the cross head10. The latter is itself slidable on rods 17 rigid with the cylinder 6 and concentric with the tubes 13. A slide 9, slidable within the cylinder 6 against a spring 41 and guided by a tube 45 has an extension 56 projecting beyond the cylinder 6. The extension 56 provides supports 56a, 56b, for the insert A and one end of the outer tube B respectively. Between the supports 56a, 56b, the extension 56 comprises a funnel-shaped portion 54. The other end of the tube B is supported by a portion 57 of the cross head 10. The support 56a and portion 57 are counterbored at 55 and 59 to receive the ends of the tube. A plunger 47 is slidable within the tube 54 against spring 51. The construction is such that the plunger 47, the funnel 54, and the insert A and tube B in position on their supports, are all coaxial. The cross head 14 carries a plunger 60 having a head 61 corresponding in diameter to the outer diameter of the core tube C and an extension 62 corresponding to the bore of the tube C. The piston 28 has a tapered extension 29 which slides within a closed cylindrical extension 34 of the cylinder head 31. Packing 32 thus seals the space within the extension 34 from the main cylinder when the piston is at its extreme right (Fig. 2). One or other of compressed air connections 23, 22 to the cylinder extension 34 and to the other end of the main cylinder 16 may be supplied through a valve 21 which however is normally biassed to supply the pipe 22 to maintain the piston 28 in inoperative position. Air pressure supplied from the main supply pipe 20 through a normally-closed valve 25 actuates the valve 21 to supply the pipe 23. The valve 25 may be opened by actuation of a solenoid 26 on simultaneous closure of palm switches 27 which are sufficiently spaced apart to necessitate the use of both hands of an operator. Operation. The parts are initially in the position of Fig. 5 with the insert A and outer bush B positioned as shown. The core tube C is positioned on the plunger 61 and a tapered leader member 63 is positioned on the other end of the tube C. On actuating switches 27 air is supplied by pipe 23 and initially acts only on the projected area of the tapered extension 29. The cross head 14 moves forward and acts through the springs 19 on the cross head 10. The bush B is thus clamped between the counter bores 55, 59 and the slide 9 is deflected against its spring 41 which is weaker than the springs 19. The insert is brought into engagement with the end of the plunger 47 which is not deflected since its spring 51 is stronger than the spring 41. The insert A is thus advanced through the funnel 54 into the tube 13. The slide 9 then engages a stop 42 rigid with the cylinder 6 and the springs 19 commence to deflect.. The tapered extension 29 of the piston 16 is now sufficiently withdrawn from the packing 32 to enable the air pressure to be applied to the whole area of the piston 28. The leader member 63 then passes through the tube B and insert A, and the core tube C is positioned within the latter. Axial stretch of the insert A in each direction between the two tubes, is limited by a second counterbore in the cross head 10 within the counterbore 59, and by the action of of a collar 48 which engages the end of the guide tube 45 to limit rearward movement of the plunger 47 against the spring 51. A receptacle carried by the frame 1 has three respective compartments for containing supplies of the inserts A and tubes B and C.
