Abstract
A non-halogenated acid-curing aminoplast contains as a latent curing catalyst 0.1 to 5.0 per cent of the addition product of an acid and a hydroxy amine compound containing at least four carbon atoms in which the amino group is on a carbon atom adjacent to a carbon atom to which at least one hydroxy group is attached. The catalyst may be a monamine, diamine or polyamine and may contain a plurality of hydroxy groups; the remainder of the catalyst molecule may contain alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cyclic or heterocyclic groups which may be substituted by inorganic groups, e.g. halogens. Suitable hydroxy amines are 2-methyl-2-amino-1-propanol; 2-aminobutanol; 2-methyl-2-amino-1,3-propanediol; tris-(hydroxy methyl) amino methane and 2-phenyl-2-amino-1-propanol. Suitable acids are hydrochloric, phosphoric, sulphuric, sulphamic, alkyl and aryl sulphonic, acetic, chloracetic, propionic, butyric, acrylic, cinnamic, benzoic, phthalic and maleic. Specified aminoplasts are the aldehyde reaction products of urea, thiourea, melamine, ammeline and guanidine, which may be modified by alcohols or amides. Curing of the aminoplast is effected at 200-300 DEG F. In examples: (1) cotton cloth is rendered shrinkproof and moisture resistant by treating it with an aqueous solution of methylol melamine and the hydrochloric acid salt of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol; (2) a moulding powder is formed by drying an aqueous solution of a urea formaldehyde condensate containing alpha cellulose and grinding it with the phosphoric acid salt of 2-amino butanol; (3) an adhesive is made by grinding together a solid urea-melamine formaldehyde condensate, walnit shell flour and the phosphoric acid salt of 2-amino butanol.ALSO:The crease resistance and shrink resistance of textiles is improved by treating them with a non-halogenated acid-curing aminoplast containing 0.1 to 5.0 per cent of a latent curing catalyst which is the addition product of an acid and a hydroxy amine compound containing at least four carbon atoms in which the amino group is on a carbon atom adjacent to a carbon atom to which at least one hydroxy group is attached. Suitable acids are hydrochloric, phosphoric, sulphuric, sulphamic, sulphonic, acetic, chloracetic, propionic, butyric, acrylic, cinnamic, benzoic, phthalic and maleic. Specified aminoplasts are the aldehyde reaction products of urea, thiourea, melamine, ammeline and guanidine. Curing of the aminoplast is effected at 200-300 DEG F. In an example cotton cloth is passed through an aqueous solution of methylol melamine and the hydrochloric acid salt of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol and is then heated at 200 DEG F. for 10 minutes to cure the resin.
