Abstract
660.141. Fibrous compositions. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 11, 1948 [Oct. 22, 1947], No. 26415/48. Class 70 A plastic composition to be used for sprav-coating the undersides of motor vehicles comprises an asphaltic base, a rubbery polymer in amount not greater than 3.25 per cent and, preferably, 1-2 per cent, of the base, short-fibre asbestos forming 40-70 per cent of the base, and a volatile thinner having a flash point of 45-50‹F. and distilling at below 300 ‹F. constituting 25-40 per cent of the entire composition. The asphaltic base is preferably a hard, brittle asphalt plasticized with 60-65 per cent of its weight of a heavy mineral oil. A pigment such as iron oxide not exceeding 10 per cent of the base can be included according to an example, " Gilsonite " (Registered Trade Mark) is plasticized with heavy mineral oil, and is dissolved in mineral spirits; iron oxide is incorporated, and a rubber solution containing 20 per cent solids is mixed in.
