Abstract
659,973. Cooling kiln charges. ALLERT, B. Sept. 29, 1949, No. 25046. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1948. [Class 51(ii)] A bell-type electrically heated kiln 1 for firing ceramics is formed with upper parts 2 closed by plugs 3, small air openings 4 at the base of the kiln, a ware supporting hearth comprising plates 7 resting on blocks 6; and an inner circumferential baffle 5 at hearth level, thermocouples 11 and 12 disposed in the upper part of the kiln and below the hearth respectively being also provided. After firing, the ware is rapidly cooled to the critical recrystallization temperature of 575‹C by removing the plugs 3 and supplying air either under natural or artificial draught through the openings 4 until an indicating or controlling pyrometer attached to the thermocouple 12 shows the above temperature. The plugs 3 are then manually or automatically replaced and further cooling of the ware is done slowly. The furnace 1 may be positioned over another hearth by a hoist 10 on rails 9.
