Abstract
655,901. Contact lenses. STIDWILL, L. July 24, 1948, No. 19841. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group V] An ophthalmic contact lens is formed of thermoplastic material, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate and the inner surface of the haptic thereof is formed with a conical area 5, which extends from the optic 1 and is blended into a rear spherical portion 3 of the haptic, an annular pocket 4 being provided at the junction of said conical and spherical portions. Apparatus for forming the lens comprises a base 8 supporting a cylindrical body 9 and an electric heater 10. A moulding unit 11 is detachably screwed to body 9 and includes a socket 12 supporting a die 19 having a spherical cavity 20. Clamped marginally between a cylinder 22 and a spacing ring 21 is a sheet 33 of thermoplastic material and axially adjustable in the cylinder and a packing ring 23 is a cylindrical pressing tool 24, the lower end 29 of which is spherical. The tool which is slidable in the cylinder under the control of a milled knob 18, includes a conical seating 26 for a steel ball 30, said seating having a shank 27 screwed into a bore 28 whereby the seating is axially adjustable in the tool to vary the degree of projection of ball 30 from the lower end 29 of the tool. In use, the sheet 33 is heated until the plastic material is workable and the tool 24 is moved downwardly so as to stretch the sheet and thus form the contact lens. Specification 634,178 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 666,319.
