Abstract
655,633. Coal-cutter picks. MUSCHAMP, N. J., and COWLISHAW, F. April 19, 1948, No. 10715. [Class 68 (i)] In a coal cutting pick having a body of metal and a tip of metal carbide, the lip is of substantially rectangular section and is located in a recess of corresponding shape in the body and so arranged that the top and cutting faces only are exposed, the tip being brazed to the body on the other faces. As shown, a pick body 1 may have an end portion 3 off-set and tapered, the end portion having a recess 5 of rectangular cross section into which is brazed a hard metal tip 6, e.g. of tungsten carbide, the three sides 7 and the inner end face 9 registering with the walls of the recess. The end of the tip may protrude beyond the end of the body and may be inclined parallel to the inclined end face 4 of the body. In a modification, Figs. 5...7 (not shown), the side faces 7 of the tip may be tapered, the wider end being exposed. The tip and leading end of the body may have a layer of hard metal carbide sprayed or welded on.
