Abstract
Pearl polymers containing inclusions of air and liquid are treated with solvents so as to remove at least partially the lower molecular components and deleterious inclusions to provide moulding powders of which the individual grains have a homogeneous molecular structure and corroded surfaces, yielding products of greater mechanical strength. Polymethyl methacrylate is specified with toluene and a mixture of trichloroethylene and ethanol as solvents. After treatment, which may be at elevated temperature and pressure, the pearls are washed, e.g. with methanol or ethanol, and dried. Mixtures of solvents including one having a swelling action on the higher molecular components and a good solvent action on the low molecular components are advantageously employed, and aqueous or non-aqueous dispersions may be used. The polymer, alone, or mixed with monomeric methyl methacrylate, may be moulded to form articles such as dental protheses or worked in other forms.
