Abstract

655,307. Variable speed friction gear. HAYES, F. A. Oct. 22,1947, No. 28299. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1946. [Class 80(ii)] In a variable speed transmission mechanism of the type having co-axial driving and driven discs, 12. 22 and 23 respectively, with processing rollers 29, 31 therebetween for the transmission of power from an input shaft 4 and through an axial pressure transmitting means such as a ball and cam device 10, 11, 13 to said discs and rollers carried by a main shaft 19, and thence to to an output shaft 16, spring means at the driving end of the main shaft 19 provides axial thrust to engage the discs and rollers at no load and further spring means maintains this thrust on wearing of the mechanism parts. The first spring means comprises a plurality of Belleville washers 38, Fig. 2, having their compression limited to a predetermined degree by a loose sleeve 37 and acts to move the main shaft 19 axially with respect to the axially movable splined driving disc 12 and the driven disc 23 through respectively a nut 39 and a loose ring 36, a loose sleeve 35, a washer 33, the inner and outer races 34, 20 of a ball thrust bearing and the cam and ball device 10, 11, 13. The further spring means comprises a Belleville washer 43 acting in parallel with the first spring means and acted upon by a nut 42 loaded by a torsion spring 44 to screw axially restoring the thrust of the washer 43 on slackening thereof. The torsion spring 44 is set to a predetermined torque by engagement of its ends 46, 47 in a selected pair of a number of spring end receiving recesses 45, 50 in the nut 42 and a collar 48 respectively. the collar being splined in a plurality of angular positions to the main shaft 19. Each adjustment means may be used singly or in combination. Specifications 254,341, [Class 80(ii)], 343,988, 344,061, 344,062, 344,063, 344,064, 344,065 and 344,066, are referred to.
