Abstract
Thioether substituted monobasic organic acids of formula RS(CH2)x.COOH, wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical or an alicyclic or aralkyl radical which may contain 10-24 carbon atoms and x is 1-5, are prepared by reacting the sodium salt of a halogen substituted organic acid with a sodium mercaptide in an alcohol-water solvent. The preparation of cetyl thioacetic acid from sodium monochloroacetate and cetyl sodium mercaptide is described. Other acids stated to be similarly obtainable are decyl and dodecyl thio-acetic acids and b -decyl thiopropionic acid.ALSO:A rust - inhibiting composition contains mineral oil, 0.01 to 0.1 per cent by weight of a thioether substituted monobasic organic acid having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the acid radical, and 0.01 to 5 per cent of an ester of a polyhydric alcohol. The organic acid may be of the formula RS(CH2)xCOOH, where R is a hydrocarbon radical having 10-24 carbon atoms, which may be alkyl, alicyclic or aralkyl, and a is 1-5, preferably 1-3; cetyl-, decyl- and dodecyl-thioacetic acids and b -decyl thiopropionic acid are referred to. The fatty acid radical of the ester preferably has 12-22 carbon atoms and the polyhydric alcohol radical 2-16 carbon atoms; esters such as those of ethylene and polyethylene glycol or glycerol with higher acids such as oleic, ricinoleic and naphthenic acids may be used. Particular esters referred to are the mono- and dioleate of pentaerythritol, sorbitan monolaurate, monopalmitate, monostearate, monooleate and trioleate, the polyoxyalkylene derivatives of these sorbitol esters, and polyethylene glycol hexaricinoleate (polyethylene glycol diester of a trimer of ricinoleic acid). The free acidity in the ester may be neutralized by adding a base such as an alkyl amine, for example phenyl ethanolamine, dicyclohexylamine or diphenyl amines. U.S.A.
