Abstract
654,203. Tapping ; chucks. TOOTHILL, G., and ASQUITH, Ltd., W. Oct. 13, 1948, Nos. 26627/48 and 7984/49. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Preset variations in the depth of engagement between curved surfaces A<SP>5</SP>, B<SP>5</SP> on relatively rotatably and axially movable driving and driven members A, B of a torque transmitter vary the torque at which the drive is interrupted on overload. As shown applied to a tapping device, drive is conveyed from a driving shaft C to the flanged clutch members A, B respectively slidably keyed and rotatable on the shaft, and loaded to and against engagement by one or more springs E, and a spring G. The depth of engagement of the said members is controlled by the selected axial length of a positioning piece O<SP>1</SP> which locates, when assembled, between the driven clutch member B and driving keys L, and the latter, engaged by a locking ring M with flats N<SP>1</SP> of a tap adaptor N, convey rotation to the tap Q<SP>1</SP>. A further adjustment of the maximum torque conveyed by the device is provided by a calibrated adjusting nut F which, through a bearing bush H, varies the axial position of the clutch member A. An adaptor suitable for a drill is also described.
