Abstract

653,533. Automatic mass flow control systems. GARRETT CORPORATION. Feb. 16, 1948, No. 4461. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] A constant weight fluid flow control device comprises a valve 15 for regulating the rate of fluid flow through a duct 5, and is responsive to both variations in fluid pressure differential on either side of an orifice 8 in the duct and variations in fluid density in the duct to maintain the weight flow constant. As shown, a diaphragm 27 is acted upon by the pressure on either side of the orifice 8, through tubes 36, 37. A rod 66 is rigidly connected to the diaphragm at 67 so that by means of a lever 64 pivoted at 65, and bell-crank lever 59, an arm 56 carrying contact 57 is positioned between oscillatory contacts 41, 42 on resilient arms 39, 40. The contacts 41, 42 are oscillated in unison by means of a cam 45 operated continuously by a motor 50. A density-responsive bellows 35 in the relatively low-pressure part of the duct also positions arm 56 through lever 70, pivoted at 71, rod 66, and levers 64, 59 so that arm 56 is positioned according to the variations in the pressure differential on either side of the orifice 8 and variation in fluid density. A tension spring 62 serves to regulate the amount of movement of arm 56. For a predetermined value of weight flow the arm 56 is positioned so that contact 57 will not make contact with oscillatory contacts 41, 42, but upon a departure from the predetermined value owing to the action of the diaphragm and bellows it will be moved to a position such that for each oscillation of the contacts 41, 42 one of these will make contact with 57 for a time depending on the extent of departure. Closure of contacts 41, 57 or 42, 57 closes a circuit to one field winding or the other of a reversible motor 20, operating through gears 17, 18 the valve 15 in a sense to correct for the departure of the weight flow from the predetermined value. Limit switches 80, 81 are provided.
