Abstract
653,515. Compressors. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 8, 1947, No. 22057. Convention date, April 24, 1939. [Class 8(i)] A compressor comprises a crankcase rotatably supporting a single throw horizontal crankshaft and having mounted thereon at least one low pressure cylinder at a substantial angle to the horizontal and at least one high pressure cylinder at a substantial angle to the low pressure cylinder and an inter-cooler supported by the cylinders and lying wholly above the lowermost point in the low pressure cylinder so that a driving device can be located in line with the crankshaft above the bottom of the crankcase and below the inter-cooler. In one example the compressor comprises a crankcase 1, a single throw crankshaft 51, low pressure cylinders 2, 3, having double acting pistons 45, inlet valves 19, 20 and outlet valves 28, 29, high pressure cylinders 4, 5, having double acting pistons 46, inlet valves 39, 40 and outlet valves 41, 42; and intercoolers 32, 33 supported by the cylinders and connecting the cylinders 2, 4 and 3, 5. The crankshaft 51 is driven by an electric motor 57. Compression is controlled by pilot valves 69, 70, 71, 72 (see Fig. 8), which are connected to the compressor discharge by a pipe 69a. At a predetermined pressure the pilot valve 69 supplies air to open the inlet valves 20, 40 of cylinders 2, 4, at a higher pressure valve 71 operates to supply air to close a valve 11 in the inlet to the cylinder 2. Subsequent higher pressures operate valves 70, 72, to open the inlet valves 20, 40 of the cylinders 3, 5 and close the valve 11 in the inlet to cylinder 3, respectively. A vent control device (not shown) is provided on each high pressure cylinder to vent the not-directly-unloaded ends to atmosphere when the valves 11 are closed. The intercoolers are water cooled and lubricating oil in the crankcase 1 is cooled by cooling pipes 64 through which water flows. The Specification also describes a two cylinder compressor with a single inter-cooler and also a two cylinder compressor having a radiator type inter-cooler cooled by two fans driven from the crankshaft.
